Diabetes

Treatment of type I entails artificial Insulin.

  • long-acting types & short-acting varieties

  • combination Insulin can be used for convenience but for the best control, it is best to mimic the body's natural processes and use a long-acting insulin with short-acting before each meal.

Treatment of type II, usually starts with exercise, weight loss & diet changes. If these do not improve the condition we may use oral medications  to either increase the amount of Insulin made.

During and after your visit, it is crucial to participate with me to maximize your ability to control this disease.

Dementia

Dementia isn’t a single disease. It's an overall term to describe a collection of symptoms common to several diseases where abnormal changes have taken place in the brain. The most common dementia symptom is a decline in thinking or cognitive skills that are severe enough to impair daily life and independent function. People with dementia can also undergo changes to their normal behavior, feelings and relationships.

Some of the common types of dementia include Alzheimer's, Vascular, Lewy Body and Frontotemporal.

You can slow the progression of dementia with preventive actions including exercise, healthy eating and treating Type 2 diabetes.

Our nurse practitioners work at least monthly with patients and caregivers and more frequently if necessary to help patients take the healthy actions to slow the progression of the disease. After a comprehensive assessment, the NP works with your doctor to create a personalized care plan. We coordinate care between all members of the patient’s care team. Our geriatric pharmacists review all the patient’s prescriptions and ensure the right medicines are taken at the right time and our medical social workers ensure that you can connect to the right community resources for help.

Asthma

In asthma, the diameter of the airways is much too small to allow the proper passage of air. Persistent narrowing of the airways that can severely limit activities of all types. Episodic asthma is influenced by exposure to:

  • cold air & hot air

  • pollen

  • exercise

  • perfume

  • allergies

This leads to wheezing, shortness of breath with activity and when bad enough, at rest.

Treatment more often than this, usually means chronic asthma. Some treatments include:

  • use of an inhaler no more than 1-2 times/week

  • preventive medication to defend against offending agents in the air or physical/emotional stresses

  • rescue inhalers for emergencies

A great tool for monitoring asthma is    the Peak Flow meter.

Hypertension

Hypertension, or high blood pressure,  is a disease that affects the body's ability to regulate the flow of blood properly. It can arise from high salt intake, high carbohydrate (starches) intake, inactivity, obesity, too much alcohol, family history or any combination of the above.

The first way to treat this is to prevent it. Based on family history  you should:

  • begin an exercise program,

  • trim the portions of your foods

  • minimize your salt intake

  • watch your blood pressure closely with your physician.

There are many effective and safe medications to treat it including:

  • Diuretics, or “water pills”

  • Beta-blockers

  • ACE-inhibitors

  • Angiotension receptor blockers

Whichever treatment is decided upon by you and your physician, your participation is the most important factor in beating this illness.

Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Embarrassing as it may be, ED is a common condition.

  • An estimated 10–20 million men in the U.S. suffer from this problem.

  • Most men experience ED at one time or another in their lifetime.

  • Studies suggest that as many as 52% of men between the ages of 40 and 70 may experience ED.

  • A national health survey revealed that ED affects nearly one out of every five men over the age of 20.

Failure to achieve an erection

more than 50% of the time, generally indicates there is a problem requiring treatment.

Because of the sensitive nature of this disorder, it often goes unreported.

This should not be something to withhold from your physician because a problem with erections often heralds disease in other areas of the body. To ignore this difficulty means we lose an opportunity to treat a condition when it is just beginning, thus making it harder more difficult to regain

health.

Battlefield Acupuncture

Classical acupuncture originated in China over 2000 years ago.  Dr. Paul Nogier began research into acupuncture which proved the ear can serve as the target organ to affect other organs &  illnesses of the body.  Dr. Nogier obtained remarkable success with small electrical microcurrents applied to acupuncture points in the ear.

It has been shown to decrease if not eliminate chronic pain in various parts of the body from arthritis to herniated discs.  The practice is a safe, practical, inexpensive & easy way to treat chronic pain of any nature.

It will also allow effective treatment of pain with less or without any medications like anti-inflammatories or narcotics.

Hypnosis

Hypnosis is becoming a popular technique to effectively overcome undesirable habits or to achieve personal goals. Common examples include stopping smoking, reducing weight, or overcoming phobias.

While hypnotized, your mind is in a very deep state of relaxation. Certain areas of your mind are “bypassed”, so you are able to receive suggestions the hypnotherapist gives you. This deep state of relaxation allows you to process the beneficial suggestions at a subconscious level. Following the session, when you are in a situation that requires you to choose between two alternative behaviors (e.g., getting a piece of fruit instead of a slice of cake), your subconscious suggestions kick-in, reminding and reinforcing you to make choices consistent with your goals.

Hypnosis can never cause you to do anything that is against your beliefs or morals. You are always fully aware of your choices and actions, while hypnotized as well as after the sessions. The hypnotic suggestions merely provide you with additional support to do things you really want to do.

Hypnosis is something that works only if the patient genuinely wants to accomplish the stated outcomes. No amount of hypnosis will work if the person really doesn’t desire the goal. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. That is, it is something you do for yourself. The hypnotherapist merely acts a guide to your goal.  your goals.

Reiki

Many ancient cultures, including the Japanese, Chinese, Indians and Egyptians embraced the belief that life energy flowed through the body, affecting our bodies, minds and emotions.  Current research strongly suggests that energy does extend throughout and beyond the physical body and that disruptions or imbalances in its flow correlate to physical, mental and emotional illnesses.  The healing art of Reiki (“Ray-key”), addresses these imbalances to support your good health and well-being.

Reiki is a Japanese word meaning universal life energy.  It is a nonintrusive method of hands-on healing that taps into the energy referred to by philosophers and martial artists as “ki” in Japan, “chi” in China and “prana” in India.

Medical research has focused upon verifying Reiki’s effects rather than explaining how it works.  The results are impressive.  One study showed a “highly significant reduction in pain” including cancer pain following a session.  Another study cited improvement in immune and nervous system functioning and increased mobility in patients with conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus and Fibromyalgia.  At Columbia/HCA Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, surgical patients decreased their use of pain medications, stayed for shorter periods of time and reported increased satisfaction with pre- and post-surgical Reiki sessions.

Reiki alleviates pain and stress and promotes restful sleep, healing, and relaxation.

I will be glad to answer any questions about my training and experience.  Always feel free to tell me what health concerns you have and if you are uncomfortable in any way during a session.
